About Cartagena:

The Island country north of Venezuela and Curacao most known for being “One Happy Island”. Unlike its fellow Caribbean Islands it resides south of the hurricane belt making it a year round destination and less likely to experience substantial storms. Home to a vast cruise port, private island with flamingos, numerous resorts, beautiful beaches and Arikok National Park. The well-maintained road network offers tourists (and locals) a unique opportunity to navigate the island’s hot spots independently or with a guide.

Let’s start off with how to say it… in English Kaar-tuh-gei-nuh, in Spanish Kaar- tuh-hen-nuh. Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the country of Colombia and the continent of South America. It is located in the northwest of the Country and a great launching point for adjacent islands and even Panama. Its location, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, offers the rich history of navigating the challenges of a port city as a first line of defense to the mainland. The Old City, still protected by its great wall, whispers the story of Cartagena’s colonial past on its colorful buildings spread through narrow streets and corridors.

Definitely pack your sneakers this city is best seen via foot, especially in the old city and along the coast promenades. Wander through the Old city and exit into unique parts of the modern city; the beautiful street art of Getsemani and the luxury of Boca and Castillo Grande.

For literary fans it is also the setting of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s romantic novel Love in the Time of Cholera. Once you’re done experiencing the culture, history and amazing food, hop on a short ferry ride to relax on the beautiful beaches of the Rosario Islands or Baru.

Looking for a location that gives you a bit of everything without overwhelming you… Cartagena is it!

Why Visit Cartagena:

Plenty to keep you entertained day and night  in the city and the option to relax with some island vibes.

My Favorite Experience:

My favorite experience was watching the sunset in a mirad of colors at the end of each day…simply breathtaking.  I loved relaxing at the Blue Apple Beach Resort in the Rosario Islands after 3 days of enjoying the city’s culture, food and history.

Location Highlights:

  • Wandering thru Old town and the street art of Getsemani
  • The food!
  • Excellent Nightlife
  • Relax in the Rosario Islands a quick boat ride from the city
  • Extend your trip by sailing to Panama

Key Tip:

Playa Blanca is considered the best beach in the area. Although it’s a bit crowded it is great for a day trip, but if you have time consider staying in the islands for a day or two to enjoy a similar experience with less crowds.

Check out the guide for a comprehensive list of hotels in the Rosario Islands

Money Saving Tip:

Vendors, cab drivers, your hotel … and pretty much everyone will attempt to sell you day excursions to Playa Blanca. However, you can book directly with beach clubs which include round trip transportation, lunch and loungers. Or if you really want to save (and know a tiny bit of spanish) you can travel to the islands via the local ferries (<$5) and rent beach chairs and food from the locals when you arrive.
