It is located in the northwest of the Country and a great launching point for adjacent islands and even Panama. Its location, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, offers the rich history of navigating the challenges of a port city as a first line of defense to the mainland. The Old City, still protected by its great wall, whispers the story of Cartagena’s colonial past on its colorful buildings spread through narrow streets and corridors. 

Definitely pack your sneakers this city is best seen via foot, especially in the old city and along the coast promenades. Wander through the Old city and exit into unique parts of the modern city; the beautiful street art of Getsemani and the luxury of Boca and Castillo Grande. 

For literary fans it is also the setting of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s romantic novel Love in the Time of Cholera. Once you’re done experiencing the culture, history and amazing food, hop on a short ferry ride to relax on the beautiful beaches of the Rosario Islands or Baru.
